FAQ · EU PPWR

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, explained.

A plain-English guide to the PPWR for packaged-goods businesses selling into the European Union.

What is the EU PPWR?

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is the EU regulation governing packaging placed on the EU market. It sets rules on recyclability, recycled content, reuse, minimisation and labelling, applied across the 27 member states.

How is the PPWR different from a directive?

As a regulation it applies more directly across member states than the earlier Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. Member-state implementations still add national rules, thresholds and reporting mechanisms.

What packaging attributes does the PPWR care about?

Material composition, weight, recyclability by design, recycled content, reuse and refill formats, minimisation of empty space and labelling. Simple Packaging screens for these attributes when a rule pack requires them.

Does Simple Packaging cover every member state?

Rule packs are being activated across the 27 EU member states in verified stages. Each activation is source-reviewed and attested before it becomes customer-available.
